Day 15 - The Volta Region of Ghana

Our Saturday morning began early with a planned departure time of 6:00 AM.  Our travels today would take us to the Volta region of Ghana.  The Volta region of Ghana is the most easternly region on Ghana bordering on Togo.

Volta Region of Ghana

Our first stop of the day was Akosombo.  Akosombo is the heart of Ghana's hydro-electric enery centre.  We stopped high on a neighbouring hiltop for a bathroom break and a breathtaking view of the Akosombo Dam.  The construction of the Akosombo dam resulted in the flooding of part of the Volta River Basin and its upstream fields, and in the creation of  Lake Volta which now covers 3.6% of Ghana’s total land area

After a quick break we resumed our bus trip with the next stop  being Amedzofe.  Amedzofe, one of the highest villages in Ghana at more than 600 meters, is perched at the foot of Mt. Gemi and it is believed to be the highest place of human inhabitation in Ghana.  It has a training school which was built in 1880 by Germans Missionaries, and a metal cross erected at the summit of Mount Gemi by these Missionaries.

After our trip down the mountain we arrived hot and thirty back in the village.  After a quick trip through the centre of the villge we arrived at the home of the village elder for palm wine tasting.

The last stop of the day was the Tafi Atome monkey santuary.  Armed with banana fingures each of us was able to entice a monkey out of the trees to eat the banana's right out of our hands.  Quite an experience!

Another fascinating day in Ghana!
